Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia is attempting to drag out negotiations that could have already moved to the final stage. The head of state held a meeting with Ukraine’s negotiating team following talks with the U.S. and Russian sides in Geneva on February 17.
The Office of the President reported that the discussions were difficult, but Ukraine continues working toward tangible results.
“Yesterday’s meetings were indeed not easy, and we can state that Russia is trying to drag out negotiations that could have already moved to the final stage. I thank the American side for its attention to detail and patience in talks with the current representatives of Russia,” Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian and U.S. delegations also met in Geneva with representatives of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The president stressed that Europe’s participation in the negotiation process is critically important for the successful implementation of possible agreements.
Zelenskyy outlined further steps and positions for the Ukrainian delegation ahead of continued talks on February 18. The agenda includes humanitarian issues, particularly steps toward a prisoner exchange and the release of civilians.
“Ukraine needs guaranteed security and a reliable, lasting peace. That is what we are working for,” the president concluded.
