Following the shift in the political balance in the United States, Ukraine’s chances of receiving additional American assistance may increase. Kyiv needs to quickly build a dialogue with the new political configuration in Washington and raise the issue of $16 billion in previously suspended support.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in his Telegram channel.
According to the president, Ukraine needs to preserve and strengthen bipartisan support in the United States, taking into account the new distribution of political power.
“Ukraine needs to move toward the new political infrastructure in the United States of America. We need to move quickly. We need to unite the bipartisan support that we have,” Zelenskyy said.
He believes the current situation may create additional opportunities for Ukraine.
“Right now, our chances of receiving additional assistance from the United States may increase,” the president said.
Zelenskyy recalls $16 billion in suspended aid
The president stressed that during the war Ukraine has no other option but to continue strengthening its own defense capabilities.
According to him, this means working on a new US aid package.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine should return to the issue of funds that had been provided for under previous agreements and decisions but were never delivered.
“We need to raise the issue that, from previous agreements and decisions, 16 billion were stopped and not provided to Ukraine. We are grateful for everything that was given, but Ukraine should at least fight for this money,” he said.
Security guarantees discussed ahead of UAE meeting
Zelenskyy also spoke separately about work on security guarantees for Ukraine.
According to him, the European Union, NATO and the United States are all represented at the meeting in Brussels.
The president stressed that future guarantees must be as specific as possible and clearly set out on paper.
“If Russia starts again, then what will happen, who will do what, with what means and when,” Zelenskyy said, describing the key questions the agreements should answer.
According to him, this work should also prepare answers to questions that may arise during discussions in the United Arab Emirates on November 10-11.
Ukraine represented at Ibero-American Summit for the first time
Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine is taking part in the Ibero-American Summit for the first time.
According to him, the invitation came personally from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The president noted that since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has sought to build more active relations with countries in Latin America and Africa.
“This is an opportunity to communicate with those who are far away from us,” Zelenskyy said.
He stressed that diplomatic support from Latin American countries is important for votes in the UN General Assembly and for the future peace process.
“At the end of the war, there will inevitably be peace. We will very much need the support of all continents, because they will also influence how just the peace Ukraine receives will be,” the president said.
Earlier, “Glavnoe in Ukraine” reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the results of the US midterm elections could strengthen support for Ukraine, while the new balance of power in Congress could bring possible negotiations on ending the war closer.
