Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and current Ambassador to the UK Valerii Zaluzhnyi believes that without real security guarantees, Russia’s war against Ukraine will likely continue not only in the military sphere but also in political and economic domains.
He wrote this in a column for LIGA.net.
Zaluzhnyi notes that Ukraine’s security guarantees could, in theory, take one of three forms: NATO membership, the deployment of nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory, or the stationing of a large foreign military contingent capable of deterring Russia. However, he states that none of these options are being considered today.
He emphasises that due to the technological and doctrinal unpreparedness of any NATO member state — or any country other than Russia, Ukraine and China — such guarantees “cannot be considered in principle.” For that reason, Zaluzhnyi argues, the war will likely continue, not only on the battlefield but also in political and economic arenas.
