An assassination attempt was made on Friday, July 31, against Ihor Obolienskyi, commander of the 2nd Corps of Ukraine’s National Guard, Khartiia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this after speaking with the military commander.
According to the president, the suspected attacker and his accomplice have already been detained. Law enforcement officers are currently carrying out the necessary procedural actions.
“I spoke with Khartiia commander Ihor Obolienskyi. There was an assassination attempt on Ihor today. The attacker and his accomplice have been detained. The necessary procedural actions are underway,” Zelensky said.
The president also said he had received a report from Oleksandr Poklad, deputy head of the Security Service of Ukraine, on the circumstances of the incident.
Zelensky described the assassination attempt as an attack on Ukraine and a Ukrainian commander and promised a response.
“We will certainly respond to this attempt to strike Ukraine and a Ukrainian commander. I thanked Ihor for his service and wished him even greater success in striking the occupiers,” the president added.
No other details of the assassination attempt, including the location of the attack, Obolienskyi’s condition or the possible motives of those detained, have been disclosed so far.
Ihor Obolienskyi, whose call sign is Kornet, commands the 2nd Corps of Ukraine’s National Guard, Khartiia. The unit was created at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion as a volunteer formation for the defence of Kharkiv and later became part of the National Guard. In July 2026, Zelensky awarded Obolienskyi the title of Hero of Ukraine.
