Ukraine has received a new launcher for the modern German-made IRIS-T air defense system, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced, emphasizing that strengthening air defenses remains one of the country’s top priorities amid ongoing Russian attacks.

According to Zelenskyy, Russia launched more than 2,300 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and 108 missiles of various types against Ukraine over the past week alone.

“Yesterday, we received a new IRIS-T launcher. We thank Germany for its continued contribution to protecting our people. Thousands upon thousands of lives have been saved thanks to this strong support,” Zelenskyy said.

The IRIS-T SLM is a modern German medium-range air defense system developed by Diehl Defence. It is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, drones, and other aerial threats.

The system can track and engage multiple targets simultaneously and has an interception range of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles). IRIS-T is considered one of the most effective air defense systems supplied to Ukraine by its Western partners.

The president stressed that Ukraine needs not only additional air defense systems but also a sufficient supply of missiles for them.

“We also need missiles for air defense systems so that we have enough capability to repel Russian attacks,” he said.

Zelenskyy also announced new agreements with Sweden on another military aid package, including support aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air force with Gripen fighter jets.

He emphasized that anti-ballistic defense remains one of Ukraine’s key priorities.

“Strong air defense can provide greater protection for our people and deprive Russia of its last remaining advantage,” Zelenskyy said.

The president thanked international partners for their support and stressed that any further escalation of the war by Russia must carry consequences, including increased sanctions pressure and stronger support for Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
