U.S. President Donald Trump announced he will delay the implementation of a 50% tariff on all imports from the European Union until July 9, 2025, to allow more time for trade negotiations. He made the announcement via his social media platform, Truth Social.

According to Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called him and requested an extension to finalize a trade deal. “I agreed to the extension until July 9, 2025. It was an honor,” Trump wrote, adding that negotiations are expected to begin shortly.

Von der Leyen confirmed the conversation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating the EU needs more time to reach an agreement. “The EU and U.S. have the most important and closest trade relationship in the world… To get a good deal, we will need time until July 9,” she wrote.

On May 23, Trump previously announced his intention to impose the 50% tariffs starting June 1, accusing the EU of “monetary manipulation, unfair legal action against American companies,” and “excessive taxes and barriers.” He said these practices have contributed to an annual U.S.-EU trade deficit of over $250 billion.
