Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that the vessel ASOMATOS unloaded 26.9 thousand tons of stolen Ukrainian grain at the Egyptian port of Abu Qir. This is the fourth such case since April involving Russian grain shipments through Egyptian ports.
Sybiha said this in a post on X. According to him, the vessel was allowed to dock and unload despite a formal request from Ukraine’s Prosecutor General to Egypt’s Ministry of Justice seeking legal assistance in the case.
The minister noted that Ukraine had provided all necessary data and legal grounds to seize the vessel and its cargo. The grain, according to Ukraine, was exported from occupied Crimea by the sanctioned company Agro-Frigat.
Sybiha stressed that Ukraine has been a reliable guarantor of food security for Egypt for many years and expressed concern over the acceptance of stolen grain by its partners.
He also recalled Ukraine’s historical experience of famine, when grain was forcibly taken from the population, noting that current actions by Russia evoke painful memories.
The foreign minister urged Egypt to uphold international law, its commitments and the principles of bilateral relations, and to refrain from accepting goods taken from occupied territories.
