The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 15. The film “Sinners” received the highest number of nominations this year.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC and the Hulu streaming service. In Ukraine, the broadcast will be exclusively shown by Suspilne Kultura.
According to Kyiv time, the preshow will start at 11:00 p.m., the red carpet broadcast at 12:30 a.m., and the awards ceremony at 1:00 a.m. Viewers will be able to watch the broadcast with professional Ukrainian translation and sign-language interpretation.
For the second year in a row, the ceremony will be hosted by Emmy-winning TV host, writer, producer and comedian Conan O’Brien. In Ukraine, the ceremony will be commented on by actor and theater director Oleksii Hnatkovskyi, who will also host the preshow.
This year, the film “Sinners” received the most nominations — it was nominated in 16 categories. The movie surpassed the previous record held by three films that received 14 nominations each: “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.”
Starting from this ceremony, the Academy introduced a rule requiring its members to watch all nominated films in each category before voting in the final round.
The film “2000 Meters to Andriivka” by Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov did not make it to this year’s list of nominees.
The long list also included Anastasiia Falileieva’s short animated film “I Died in Irpin” and the British film “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” which featured Ukrainian actors, but they did not reach the final nominations.
Among the nominees is the documentary short Armed Only With A Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud, about American journalist Brent Renaud, who was killed in Irpin in 2022 during Russian shelling.
At the same time, the documentary film “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” was nominated in the Best Documentary category, while the animated short “Three Sisters” by Russian director Konstantin Bronzit is nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category.
This year a new category, Best Casting, will be introduced, increasing the total number of competitive Oscar categories to 24.
Last year’s winners — Mikey Madison, Adrien Brody, Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin — will present the acting awards. The stage will also feature Javier Bardem, Anne Hathaway, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as Paul Mescal, Demi Moore and Kumail Nanjiani.
