The Parliament of Moldova has decided to withdraw from the statutory bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Lawmakers denounced the key agreements regulating the country’s participation in the organization. As a result, Chisinau will save 3.1 million lei annually.
This was reported by the press service of the Moldovan Parliament.
The Parliament supported the decision to denounce the Agreement on the Establishment of the CIS, its protocol, and the organization’s Charter. Thus, the country is окончательно прекращает участие в уставных органах Содружества.
The initiative came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova. The ministry stated that the core principles of the CIS, including mutual recognition of territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders, are no longer being respected.
Among the reasons cited are Russia’s war against Ukraine, its aggression against Georgia, as well as the незаконное размещение российских войск в Приднестровском регионе Молдовы. In Chisinau, it is believed that under such conditions further participation in the organization is impossible.
After leaving, the country will save about 3.1 million lei annually, which it previously paid to the CIS budget.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted that this step is part of the course toward European integration and closer alignment with membership in the European Union.
At the same time, Moldova will continue cooperation with individual CIS member states on bilateral and multilateral platforms and will remain a party to a number of agreements, particularly in the trade, economic, and social spheres.
Previously, the country had already denounced about 70 agreements within the CIS as part of aligning its legislation with EU standards.
