By January 24, journalists from the BBC and Mediaphone, together with a team of volunteers, had identified the names of 90,019 Russian servicemen killed in the Russian war against Ukraine from open sources.
Over the past two weeks, since January 10, journalists and volunteers have identified 1964 people
23% of all the dead are people who signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry after the war began. 17% of all known dead are prisoners who went to war from colonies, 12% are mobilized.
17% of the identified dead are career military personnel. The list of journalists includes nine generals and 500 soldiers with the rank of lieutenant colonel and above.
As of January 24, most of the dead were in Bashkortostan, the authors of the study note. Authorities and media in the region reported a total of 3,932 deaths.
The BBC notes that the real losses are higher, as the analysis of journalists may cover 45% of the real number of deaths.
