The number of Ukrainians seeking protection in Germany has increased tenfold since the Ukrainian government lifted the ban on travel for men aged 18-22.

This was reported by Die Welt, citing the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

The lifting of the travel ban for Ukrainian men of conscription age between 18 and 22 has led to a sharp increase in the number of applications for protection from this category – from about 100 per week before the rule came into force to about 1,000 per week as of now.

The German Interior Ministry cannot assess how temporary this phenomenon is.

The total number of Ukrainian citizens arriving in Germany is also steadily increasing. According to the German Interior Ministry, 7,961 people were registered through the Free registration system in May, 11,277 in August, and 18,755 in September.

Ukrainians seeking protection in Germany have a different legal status than refugees. They receive a residence permit in accordance with Section 24 of the Residence Act, which entitles them to immediate access to work and social benefits.
