The Convention on the establishment of an International Compensation Commission for Ukraine was signed in The Hague, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy taking part in the diplomatic conference.
This was reported by the Office of the President of Ukraine.
During the event, Zelenskyy thanked international partners for supporting Ukraine, the Ukrainian people and the country’s right to self-defense. He said that the creation of such mechanisms should have begun much earlier, given Russia’s actions.
The president called for sustained pressure on Russia as long as the occupation of Ukrainian territory continues, Ukrainians remain in Russian captivity and Ukrainian children abducted by Russia have not returned home. According to him, Russia must feel the consequences of its actions.
Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of launching all compensation mechanisms — from the Register of Damage and the Compensation Commission to actual payments — with strong and sufficient international support so that people can see that war-related losses will be compensated.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said there can be no just and lasting peace without justice and emphasized that once peace is achieved, Ukraine can continue to count on the Netherlands and its partners.
The Convention was signed on behalf of Ukraine by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset described the document as a unique, independent international instrument and said that 35 countries are expected to sign the Convention on its first day.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu also called for continued support for Ukraine, noting that the Commission matters to people who have lost loved ones, homes and whose lives have been permanently changed by the war.
