Apple is in the final stages of developing new AirPods with built-in cameras that could become the company’s first mass-market wearable AI device.
Bloomberg reported this, citing sources familiar with the project.
According to the report, prototype earbuds have already reached the design validation testing stage — the final major testing phase before preparation for mass production.
The cameras in the new AirPods are not intended for taking photos or videos. Instead, they are designed to function as “eyes” for Siri and analyze the surrounding environment to support AI-powered features.
For example, users could ask questions about objects in front of them, such as requesting cooking suggestions based on ingredients detected by the cameras.
The AI features could also remind users about certain objects or provide navigation assistance using visual landmarks.
Bloomberg reports that the new AirPods will resemble AirPods Pro 3 in appearance but will feature longer stems to accommodate the cameras.
Apple initially planned to release the device in the first half of 2026, but the launch was delayed due to setbacks involving the revamped Siri. The updated Siri is now expected in September.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is also working on other AI-powered devices, including smart glasses and a camera-equipped wearable device designed to be worn around the neck.
At the same time, the company is attempting to address privacy concerns. The earbuds are expected to include an LED indicator that lights up whenever visual data is being transmitted to cloud services.
Bloomberg also notes that Apple expects strong demand for the new AirPods and is already working to secure enough components for production.
