Ukrainian short track speed skater Oleg Gandey has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 500 m race at the 2026 Olympic Games. This is the first time in the history of the Games that a representative of Ukraine will compete in the quarterfinals in this discipline.
This was reported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine.
In qualifying race 7, after three athletes fell, Oleg Gandey took second place with a result of 49.020.
After the finish, the athlete shared his condition in a comment for Suspilne Sport.
“Right now, my injured leg hurts a lot, both legs. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Right now, I’m applying ice and hoping that it will at least reduce the inflammation,” Gandey said.
At the 2022 Beijing Games, Oleg Gandey finished 26th in the 500-meter race.
The Olympic medals in the 500-meter race will be awarded on February 18.
