President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Brigadier General Hennadiy Shapovalov as the new commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The corresponding decree No. 412/2025 was published on the website of the Office of the President.
Hennadiy Shapovalov is a brigadier general. He began his career as a tank platoon commander and later became commander of the Yakov Gandzyuk Separate Motorised Infantry Brigade. In 2022, he was promoted to brigadier general.
On 20 June 2023, he joined the Commission on Coordination of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic Integration.
In the spring of 2024, Shapovalov was appointed commander of the Operational Command ‘South’. In this position, he replaced Andriy Kovalchuk, who headed the Odessa Military Academy.
In early 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Brigadier General Hennadiy Shapovalov to a new position – to coordinate military assistance to Ukraine in Wiesbaden.
The NATO Support and Training Mission Ukraine (NSATU) is located in Wiesbaden, Germany.
