Today, January 22, Ukraine marks Unity Day — a holiday celebrating the unity of Ukrainian lands. This year it takes place against the backdrop of a full-scale war and Russia’s mass strikes on cities and critical infrastructure.

Unity Day of Ukraine is tied to the proclamation of the Act of Unification of the UPR and the WUPR on January 22, 1919, which закрепило Ukrainians’ aspiration to live in a single, independent state. This event became a symbol of the indivisibility of Ukrainian lands and a common historical fate.

In 2026, Ukraine marks Unity Day under wartime conditions, when the question of unity has not only symbolic but also practical importance. After another wave of Russia’s mass attacks on regions of the country, with disruptions to electricity, heating, and water supplies, national and local services, the military, and volunteers are working together to support people and rebuild what has been destroyed.

On this day, Ukraine traditionally remembers that unity is not only a historical act, but also a daily shared responsibility for preserving the state, its territorial integrity, and its future.
