For the first time, the Ukrainian military has destroyed a Russian X-59 air defense missile using APKWS. Before that, the Defense Forces used these missiles only to destroy the Shahed.
According to Defense Express, the event took place on January 25.
The Ukrainian Navy published a video in which the crew of one of the boats shot down a Russian air-to-surface missile flying in the direction of the Pivdennyi port.
Analysts note that the X-59 was shot down using the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), a high-precision weapon that combines unguided 70mm Hydra 70 missiles with a semi-active laser guidance unit.
The transfer of the APKWS to Ukraine became known in 2023, when Germany announced the provision of this system as part of military assistance.
