A new stage of the prisoner exchange took place today within the framework of the agreements in Istanbul. Ukrainian servicemen with serious injuries and serious health problems were released from Russian captivity. This was reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
Fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular the Airborne Assault Troops, the Naval Forces, the Territorial Defense Forces, as well as the National Guard, the State Border Service and the State Special Transport Service, returned to their homeland.
Most of the released had been in captivity since 2022. A significant part fell into Russian captivity during the battles for Mariupol. Among the released were many officers, as well as servicemen under the age of 25.
In general, fighters who defended Ukraine in the Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Kherson, Kharkiv, Sumy and Kursk directions returned to freedom.
All those released will undergo a medical examination, receive support for physical and psychological rehabilitation, as well as payments provided by the state for the time spent in captivity.
The Coordination Headquarters emphasized that the exchange continues and the next stage is already being prepared.
