On Saturday, May 9, Ukraine is celebrating Europe Day together with the countries of the European Union.

The holiday symbolizes peace, unity, and cooperation among European nations. It was on May 9, 1950, that French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented the declaration that became the foundation for the creation of the European Union.

Ukraine has officially celebrated Europe Day on May 9 since 2023. The corresponding decree was signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on May 8, 2023.

The presidential decree stated that the decision was made “recognizing the European identity of the Ukrainian people” and aimed at strengthening the unity of European nations, as well as ensuring peace, security, and stability on the European continent.

The document also repealed the previous 2003 decree under which Europe Day in Ukraine had been celebrated on the third Saturday of May.

Moving the celebration to May 9 was intended to emphasize Ukraine’s unity with the European Union and shared European values.

On this day, official ceremonies, thematic events, and cultural activities dedicated to European integration and cooperation are held across Ukraine and EU countries.
