Elina Svitolina has ended her run at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, falling just short of the final.
In the semi-final match, the Ukrainian lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 5-7.
Svitolina came into the match on the back of 11 consecutive wins, one of the best runs of her career. Sabalenka had previously knocked another Ukrainian, Marta Kostyuk, out of the tournament.
This was the sixth face-to-face meeting between Svitolina and Sabalenka. The Ukrainian has won only once — in 2020 at a tournament in Strasbourg.
