On the morning of May 7, several drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia, and two of them crashed. One drone was found on the grounds of an oil depot in the city of Rēzekne.
This was reported by LRT.
The Latvian National Armed Forces reported that the crash site of one of the drones has already been located. Latvia has activated a mobile air defense unit and an allied mission to patrol the Baltic airspace. Army, police, and fire and rescue service units are working at the scene of the incident.
Around 3:30 a.m., emergency responders received a report of a possible fire at an oil storage facility in the city of Rēzekne. Upon arrival at the scene, no open flames were found, but one of the tanks had to be cooled.
Residents of the municipalities of Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne were urged to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and call 112 if they spot any suspicious objects.
Military officials noted that the drones came from the direction of Russia, but this does not necessarily mean they were Russian. Similar incidents have occurred previously involving Ukrainian drones attacking Russian targets.
Due to the incident in Rezekne, classes were canceled at all educational institutions on May 7.
