Voting for parliamentary elections is underway in Georgia on 26 October. More than three thousand polling stations opened across the country today at 8:00 local time.
Citizens of Georgia elect 150 deputies to the parliament by proportional system – that is, the percentage of votes of one or another party will correspond to the number of seats in the parliament.
18 party associations are participating in the elections. According to opinion polls, five parties have the best chance of overcoming the five per cent threshold: the ruling Georgian Dream, which is considered pro-Russian, as well as the opposition pro-Western United National Movement, Coalition of Changes, Strong Georgia and For Georgia.
A total of 3.5 million Georgian citizens can take part in the elections, according to the CEC.
Voting will continue until 20:00. Preliminary election results are expected to be announced one or two hours after the polling stations close.
