In 2026, Norway plans to allocate 2 billion Norwegian kroner (≈ $198,620,000) to finance a new package of military equipment from the United States for Ukraine as part of the PURL initiative.
This was reported by the press service of the Norwegian government.
“Norway is now joining forces with a number of other European countries to finance a military aid package that will provide Ukraine with priority defense equipment. We plan to allocate 2 billion Norwegian kroner to this package, which is coordinated by NATO,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
At the Contact Group meeting, which will take place on the eve of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting, several European countries will coordinate their planned contributions to Ukraine, including support to be provided under the new US and NATO initiative, the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL). Norway has already allocated 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner to finance the previous support package under this initiative.
“It is extremely important that European countries act together and continue to provide support so that we can jointly finance the supply of necessary military equipment to Ukraine, such as drones, artillery, and modern air defense systems. Under the PURL mechanism, the US provides NATO with lists of available American weapons and military equipment. Allies, including Norway, then allocate funds to purchase this equipment for Ukraine,” said Defense Minister Tor Sandvik.
NATO coordinates the deliveries to ensure that the equipment arrives in Ukraine as quickly as possible. For security reasons, the specific contents of each package are not disclosed.
“Norway has already financed two such support packages, and the government will work to ensure that as many allied countries as possible join this important initiative in support of Ukraine. The equipment is arriving quickly and helping Ukrainians defend the front line and critical infrastructure more effectively. Supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom is not only vital for its defense, but also crucial for the security of Norway and all of Europe,” Sandvik emphasized.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Norwegian government has committed to providing more than NOK 100 billion in military support to Ukraine through specific agreements and arrangements.
