Norway has announced the allocation of another $500 million to the PURL program to purchase American weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thus, Norway is ready to cover half of the total planned funding for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in December on its own.
This was announced by Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide before the start of the NATO meeting in Brussels, according to European Pravda.
“Today, Norway will announce an additional $500 million for the PURL program, which will be provided in two packages: one with Germany and Poland and one with Germany and the Netherlands,” Espen Barth Eide said.
NATO’s goal is to provide $1 billion in monthly funding. However, there is no upper limit on the amount of purchases, and if funding increases, Ukraine will receive more weapons.
The significant increase in donations to PURL in Norway is explained by the need to support Ukraine during the “peace talks.”
“The time has come to dramatically increase support for Ukraine so that Ukrainians can negotiate from a position of strength,” said Bart Eide.
And even if the negotiations are successful, according to Bart Eide, the need to strengthen the Armed Forces of Ukraine will not disappear.
“It is also important to remember that when the war ends, Ukraine must be strong and capable of defending itself against the resumption of hostilities,” the Norwegian Foreign Ministry emphasizes.
