Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has postponed a decision on the 13th military aid package for Ukraine, which is reportedly already prepared for shipment. According to Italian media, Rome is now waiting for the results of the US midterm elections before unblocking the package.
This was reported by Il Giornale d’Italia.
The outlet notes that around ten months have passed since Italy’s last shipment of military aid to Ukraine. The new package is described as ready, but no specific delivery date has yet been set.
Decision has already been postponed several times
According to the report, a decision on the 13th package was initially expected in July, then postponed until September, and later until after the League party congress.
The US midterm elections have now become the new reference point.
It remains unclear what specific outcome of the US vote could influence Rome’s decision or whether the aid would be dispatched immediately after the election.
Il Giornale d’Italia writes that this is not an outright decision by Italy to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine, but rather a series of postponements.
Meloni’s government continues to publicly reaffirm its support for Kyiv but has not given a timetable for the delivery of the new package.
Agreement with Macron and Zelenskyy also in question
According to the outlet, the delay could also affect commitments Meloni previously made to French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
There is currently no indication that the agreements have been cancelled or that Rome has abandoned them. However, the timeline for their implementation remains uncertain.
The report also does not provide details on the contents of the 13th package or the specific weapons Ukraine is expected to receive.
The Italian government continues to say that support for Ukraine will continue, but after a ten-month pause, the date of the next military shipment remains unknown.
