Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals for the first time in her career. In the fourth round, she defeated world No. 3 Iga Swiatek of Poland in straight sets.

According to Suspilne Sport, Kostyuk entered the match riding a 15-match winning streak on clay. This season, she has already captured titles at the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen and the WTA 1000 event in Madrid.

Despite her impressive form, Swiatek had been a difficult opponent for the Ukrainian. The two had met three times previously, with Kostyuk failing to win a single set. Their first meeting came at Roland Garros in 2021.

In the 2026 Roland Garros round of 16, however, Kostyuk finally turned the tables. The opening set remained level until the final game, when the Ukrainian secured a crucial break to win 7-5.

The second set was dominated by Kostyuk. After losing the opening game on her serve, she won the next six games in a row to seal a commanding 6-1 victory.

Roland Garros 2026. Round of 16:

        Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine, 15) def. Iga Swiatek (Poland, 3) — 2-0 (7-5, 6-1).

Speaking after the match, Kostyuk admitted she was still struggling to process the result.

“I’m still in shock. To beat a player who has won here four times and beaten me three times is incredible. I can’t believe it. The most important thing I’ve been doing is trying to enjoy the experience. I woke up this morning thinking what an amazing day it would be to play here against Iga,” she said.

Kostyuk added that she wants to keep enjoying tennis rather than focusing solely on wins and losses.

With the victory, Kostyuk became only the second Ukrainian woman to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals. The first was Elina Svitolina, who has reached that stage five times.

The result also marks Kostyuk’s second Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance after reaching the last eight at the 2024 Australian Open.

Her next opponent will be determined in the match between Ukraine’s top-ranked player Elina Svitolina and Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic.
