Ukrainian police have detained a man who threw a live grenade at a group of people near a supermarket in the city of Zhytomyr on the night of May 30. The explosion injured six civilians, all of whom were hospitalized. The suspect was apprehended the following day. This was reported by the communications department of the Zhytomyr Regional Police.
According to investigators, a conflict broke out late in the evening between the suspect and a group of local residents near a supermarket on Myru Avenue. The man left the scene, went home, retrieved a military-grade grenade, and returned to the location. He then activated the explosive device and threw it toward the group of people before fleeing.
On May 31, with support from the special police unit KORD, law enforcement officers located and detained the suspect. Police say he had previously been convicted of illegal possession of weapons.
The suspect has been formally charged with attempted murder of two or more persons committed in a manner dangerous to the lives of many (under Part 2 of Article 15 and Paragraphs 1 and 5 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Authorities are currently deciding on pre-trial detention.
If found guilty, he faces 10 to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment. The investigation is ongoing.
