Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the tournament named after Ukrainian athlete Oleksiy Demyanuk, which took place in Lviv, with a record result.
The Ukrainian star cleared 1.91 metres on her first attempt, which was enough to win. She continued jumping and cleared 2.03 metres on her third attempt, breaking her own previous competition record of 2.01 metres.
The 24-year-old Mahuchikh was the first female athlete in the world to clear 2.00 metres in 2026. It was her first start of the season, and the athlete opened the season in Ukraine for the first time in three years.
‘Why did I decide to start in Ukraine? After almost four years of travelling back and forth, I missed home, so this year I am training at home. That’s why I’m opening the season at home. I will compete in the Ukrainian Championships in February,’ Mahuchikh said after the competition.
Maguchikh is the Olympic champion in Paris and one of the best athletes in the world.
Last season, she won the European Indoor Championships, won bronze medals at two World Championships (outdoor and indoor), and took silver in the Diamond League final.
