Yaroslava Mahuchikh became the Ukrainian high jump champion for the second time in her career. The Olympic champion won the competition in Lviv with a result of 2.00 metres, Suspilne Sport reports.
It was Mahuchikh’s first appearance at the national championships in five years. She last competed at the Ukrainian championships in 2021.
One of Mahuchikh’s main rivals was Iryna Herashchenko, who returned to the national championships after a two-year break.
Herashchenko began the competition at 1.75 metres, clearing the height on her second attempt. She then cleared 1.79 metres on her first attempt and 1.83 metres on her second.
Mahuchikh entered the competition at 1.87 metres. Both athletes cleared the height on their first attempts.
Herashchenko failed at 1.90 metres and carried her remaining two attempts over to 1.93 metres, but was unable to clear the bar. Mahuchikh therefore secured the title at 1.93 metres.
Yaroslava then cleared 1.96 metres before jumping 2.00 metres for the first time during the outdoor part of the season.
Mahuchikh also attempted 2.04 metres in an effort to improve her own world-leading mark of 2.03 metres, set at the Demianiuk Memorial in January. However, all three attempts were unsuccessful.
Iryna Herashchenko finished second with a result of 1.87 metres. Liliia Klintsova won bronze after clearing 1.79 metres.
