The Japanese government has decided to join NATO’s initiative to supply Ukraine with American-made military equipment. The country is expected to finance only non-lethal defense equipment, including radar systems and body armor.
This was reported by Japanese public television NHK.
It is noted that Japan has already informed several NATO countries and the Ukrainian authorities of its decision, and in the near future, it is expected to officially announce its participation in the PURL program as an Alliance partner in Asia.
One NATO representative stressed that even non-lethal equipment is necessary for Ukraine, and Japan’s participation will be an important step.
NATO and the United States created a mechanism for coordinating the procurement and supply of US-made ammunition and equipment to Ukraine in July 2025. More than 20 member states, including Germany and the Netherlands, have already announced their willingness to contribute, and Australia and New Zealand have also promised to join.
Under this mechanism, allies have already transferred missiles for Patriot air defense systems and other equipment to Ukraine.
