A localized ceasefire has taken effect near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, brokered by the IAEA to allow repairs to a damaged power line and restore the plant’s off-site power supply. The ZNPP has relied on emergency diesel generators since August 20, and its fuel reserves may last only a few more days.
This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Due to military activity on the northern side of the Dnipro River, the plant lost its connection on August 20 to its last remaining power line, the 330-kilovolt Ferosplavna-1 line. Since then, diesel generators have been providing cooling for the plant’s six reactors and spent fuel pools.
According to the IAEA, diesel fuel reserves at the plant are running low. If off-site power is not restored or additional fuel is not delivered to the site, the plant could face a complete station blackout within days.
After the area is demined, Ukrainian technicians are expected to begin repairing the damaged power line. An IAEA team will monitor the work for the duration of the temporary ceasefire.
This is the seventh localized ceasefire brokered by the IAEA as part of efforts to prevent a nuclear accident during the war.
