Hungarian internet providers have begun restricting access to Ukrainian news websites that the government in Budapest recently declared prohibited, according to European Pravda.

As of the morning of September 30, the blocking was already in place on fixed-line networks, while mobile operators started restricting access during the day. The first outlet affected was European Pravda, which was taken offline immediately after the announcement.

Most other Ukrainian media included on Hungary’s list, however, remain accessible — among them Ukrainska Pravda itself.

The move comes after Ukraine banned several foreign outlets in mid-September, including Hungary’s Origo and Demokrata, for spreading Russian propaganda. On September 29, Budapest announced “mirror measures” against Ukrainian media.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Hungarian decision, calling it a restriction on Hungarian citizens’ access to fact-based journalism.
