Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar held his first meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels on October 16. The two leaders agreed to continue consultations at the ministerial level, focusing on minority rights and the development of political and economic relations between their countries.
Péter Magyar announced the meeting’s outcome on Facebook.
Magyar welcomed the political agreement between Ukraine and Hungary aimed at strengthening the rights of the ethnic Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region.
“We recognized the Ukrainian parliament’s adoption of the minority education law based on the agreement, and the Ukrainian side’s immediate steps to implement it, as a first step toward restoring mutual trust. I thanked the Ukrainian parliament for its September resolution recognizing that crimes were committed against ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpattia between 1944 and 1946 through forced labor and mass deportations,” Magyar wrote.
During the talks, Zelenskyy and Magyar agreed to continue bilateral consultations at the ministerial level and pay particular attention to further improving the situation of national minorities in both countries.
“We agreed that it is in the interests of both countries to put political and economic relations on a new footing,” Magyar said.
Magyar also stated that Hungary was ready to use all available diplomatic means to help achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible and establish lasting peace.
“I assured the president of Ukraine of my full solidarity in the face of the inhumane Russian aggression against his country, which has been ongoing for almost five years,” he wrote.
