Russia is forced to massively recommission obsolete T-62 tanks due to heavy irretrievable losses of modern armoured vehicles in the war against Ukraine. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine (GUR).
According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, due to the depletion of stocks of combat vehicles from the 1970s, the Russian Armed Forces command has begun to actively return even older models to service. The restoration of the T-62 is mainly taking place at the 103rd Armoured Repair Plant in the village of Atamanovka in the Trans-Baikal region, and supplies are being delivered from the warehouses of the Eastern Military District.
In particular, on 27 June, 21 T-62 units were transferred to the European part of Russia. Most of these vehicles have been stored outdoors for a long time without maintenance, so their condition is unsatisfactory. However, due to the shortage of modern T-90M and T-72B3M tanks, the Russians are forced to use the T-62 as a temporary solution.
The key reasons for the shortage of modern armoured vehicles remain the lack of production capacity and the shortage of imported high-tech components. In addition to participating in combat operations, T-62s are also often used as stationary firing points to strengthen defensive lines.
