European Union foreign ministers have agreed to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas.

“This will continue to deprive Moscow of revenues to finance its war. Russia needs to pay for the damage they are causing,” Kallas wrote.

The extension of the sanctions was opposed by Hungary. Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Brussels should review the sanctions policy and lift some restrictions. He also emphasized that Ukraine should resume transit of Russian gas.

In the end, Budapest agreed not to block the decision, but insisted on taking into account Hungary’s concerns about energy security. In response, the EU pledged to issue a statement that would take these concerns into account.
