On October 21, U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg and present an updated proposal to end the war in Ukraine. Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner will join the talks remotely.
This was reported by Axios.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that the meeting would take place in the first half of the day. He said the war in Ukraine would be the main topic and that the talks had been planned and agreed upon in advance.
Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev will also attend the meeting.
According to Ushakov, Kushner will be unable to travel to St. Petersburg in person due to illness and may join the talks online.
Ushakov also said Moscow had had no contact with Zelenskyy during previous negotiations on Ukraine.
According to Axios, Witkoff will present the Russian president with an updated peace proposal following talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The White House hopes Putin will show greater willingness to compromise after Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel sales and other steps by Washington that were welcomed in Moscow.
