Military officers, sergeants and petty officers serving under contract will have to master English to apply for certain positions. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has adopted the relevant resolution.
The language requirements will primarily apply to senior positions in the following structures:
- Ministry of Defence of Ukraine;
- The Armed Forces of Ukraine;
- The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine;
- State Special Transport Service;
- Department of State Protection;
- Security Service of Ukraine;
- Foreign Intelligence Service;
- State Special Communications Service;
- State Border Guard Service;
- National Guard.
The Resolution defines a clear list of positions and the required level of language proficiency in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference and NATO Standard STANAG 6001.
English is the key to NATO and international cooperation
According to the Deputy Minister of Defence, Brigadier General of Justice Serhiy Melnyk, English language proficiency is becoming critically important for the Armed Forces of Ukraine:
‘Successful Euro-Atlantic integration requires military specialists who will implement NATO standards, share combat experience with partners and actively participate in international security initiatives. Knowledge of English is the key to effective interaction with our allies and strengthening the defence capabilities of our country.’
This decision will not only improve the professional interaction of servicemen in international projects, but will also contribute to Ukraine’s progress towards NATO and EU membership.
How the language requirements will be implemented.
The requirements will be implemented in accordance with the Law ‘On the Use of English in Ukraine’. The resolution will come into force four years after the end or cancellation of martial law.
