China became the largest market for Russian pipeline gas in 2024, Bloomberg reported, citing its own calculations.

In January-September, Gazprom exported 23.7 billion cubic metres of natural gas to China, which is almost 40% more than in the same period in 2023, according to the agency’s calculations based on Chinese customs information and data from the Russian Ministry of Economy.

By this indicator, China has overtaken Europe. According to calculations based on data on gas supplies through Ukraine and the Turkish Stream pipeline, from January to September, Gazprom supplied 22.5 billion cubic metres of gas to its European customers.

According to Bloomberg, after Russia’s invasion, most EU countries limited supplies from Russia and began looking for alternatives to Russian gas. At the same time, some countries, including Hungary, Austria, and Slovakia, continue to receive gas from Russia. According to the agency’s estimates, in the first nine months of 2024, Russian gas exports to this region increased by 16% compared to the same period last year.
