President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and leaders of major European countries have issued a joint statement supporting a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. They voiced their support for US President Donald Trump’s position on the immediate cessation of hostilities and the start of negotiations based on the current front line.
The statement was published on the website of the British government on October 21.
The joint statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the French and Finnish presidents, the British, Italian, Polish, and Norwegian prime ministers, the German chancellor, the president of the European Commission, and the president of the European Council emphasizes that “international borders cannot be changed by force.”
The statement emphasizes that Ukraine remains the only party seriously seeking peace, while Russia continues to choose “violence and destruction.” The leaders called for increased pressure on the Russian economy and defense industry until Moscow is ready for a peaceful settlement.
The statement also mentions the intention to use Russia’s frozen state assets to provide Ukraine with the necessary resources. Further steps will be discussed this week at a meeting of the European Council and in the format of the “Coalition of the Willing.”
