President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported on the consequences of the Russian missile strike on the city of Sumy, carried out on Palm Sunday. He made the statement in his address on April 14.
According to the President, as of now, 34 people have been confirmed dead and 117 injured, including children — among them a girl born in 2025. The attack was carried out with two Russian ballistic missiles: one struck a university building, while the second detonated above a city street in the downtown area.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to doctors and emergency responders who arrived at the scene within minutes and began rescue operations. He described the attack as “a strike right in the city center” and emphasized that only “utterly deranged scum” could commit such an act.
The President noted that the international community strongly condemned the Russian strike on Sumy. Expressions of sympathy and support have come from the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Slovakia, Sweden, the Netherlands, and top EU officials.
Zelensky stressed that the war continues because the aggressor does not yet feel enough pressure from the world. He recalled that exactly one month ago, Russia rejected a U.S. proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire, and since then has been launching near-daily drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
He pointed out that Russian aggression continues both on the front lines and in the informational space, fueled by state propaganda. The only way to stop this, he said, is through pressure and decisive international action.
The President also thanked all countries and leaders supporting Ukraine, including for the new aid packages agreed after the latest Ramstein-format meeting and through bilateral agreements. He emphasized that Ukraine will endure, will secure reliable security guarantees, and will achieve its goals.
