On July 23, a UH-1Y Venom helicopter crashed at a military base in the Czech Republic. One servicemember was killed and four others were injured.
This was reported by the Czech Army in a post on X.
The accident occurred at the 22nd Helicopter Air Base in Náměšť nad Oslavou. There were five servicemembers on board the helicopter. One of them was killed, while the other four sustained injuries.
The name of the deceased servicemember and other personal details have not been released out of respect for the family.
“At this extremely difficult time, we extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family, loved ones, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. The loss of a member of the Army of the Czech Republic is a tragedy that affects not only those closest to him but the entire military community,” the statement said.
The injured servicemembers and their families are receiving assistance. Until the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is completed, the Czech Army has suspended the operation of all H-1 system helicopters.
Background. The UH-1Y Venom helicopter is a modern version of the legendary Huey series manufactured by the American company Bell Textron. The Czech Republic began operating these helicopters in July 2023. They replaced the outdated Soviet-made Mi-35 combat and transport helicopters, which were transferred to Ukraine.
