Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk plans to hold the final bouts of his professional career in the United States. His team says the champion wants to “write the final chapter” of his boxing legacy there.
Usyk’s sporting director Serhii Lapin said this in a comment to ESPN.
According to Lapin, the decision on the Ukrainian champion’s next steps was made with the future of the heavyweight division and the closing stage of Usyk’s career in mind.
“As Usyk’s sporting director, I can say that this decision was made with the future of the heavyweight division in mind. Oleksandr’s goal has always been to finish his legendary career with his final fights in the United States, where he wants to write the last chapter of his boxing legacy,” Lapin said.
The statement came amid reports that Usyk is vacating some of his championship titles ahead of his “last dance.” However, this does not mean an immediate retirement, but rather preparations for a final series of fights.
Oleksandr Usyk remains one of the most successful boxers of the modern era. The Ukrainian became the undisputed world champion at cruiserweight before moving up to heavyweight, where he also collected the division’s major belts.
Usyk’s next opponent has not yet been officially announced. Boxing media have named major fights in the United States among the possible options for the final stage of the Ukrainian’s career.
