The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Main Intelligence Directorate, evacuated a Ukrainian woman and her two children from Syria, who had been held in the closed Kurdish camp Roj for six years.
This was announced by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga.
The evacuees were issued passports and provided consular assistance for a safe return home.
“In total, Ukraine evacuated 14 women and 41 children from the Roj camp, completing the final evacuation of all Ukrainian citizens who requested to leave,” Sybiga said.
The Main Intelligence Directorate provided details of the return of a Ukrainian woman and her children home from the closed Syrian camp in Roj.
“The evacuated woman is the last Ukrainian citizen who had been held in a Kurdish camp in northeastern Syria for six years, effectively as a prisoner. She is now with her children in Ukraine, where she was met by her relatives,” the GUR said.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, there were 89 Ukrainian citizens in the Roj camp.
“Most of them are women, including from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, who for various reasons went to Syria in search of a better life and found themselves in difficult circumstances. The citizens who were successfully evacuated from the Syrian camp mostly express regret that they once decided to leave their native Ukraine,” the statement said.
