Ukraine will introduce a new speciality for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operators who will perform aerial reconnaissance and explosive detection tasks.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the relevant standard DSTU 8820-4:2025 has been approved by the National Standardisation Authority of Ukraine. The document will come into force on 1 May 2025 and will define the key principles and requirements for the use of mechanised demining equipment (MDE) during the clearance of mines and explosive remnants of war.

The new standard will harmonise the Ukrainian regulatory framework with international IMAS (International Mine Action Standards) standards, which will help improve the effectiveness of humanitarian demining.

The Ministry of Defence noted that the MDE will be tested at a specially created test site. This will allow to check their effectiveness in real conditions and ensure the implementation of international best practices in combating the mine threat.

‘This standard is an important step towards improving the effectiveness of humanitarian demining in Ukraine and implementing international best practices in combating the mine threat,’ the ministry said.
