The head of the Come Back Alive Foundation, Taras Chmut, has released alarming statistics on the situation at the front, based on an analysis of open sources provided by the Militarny editorial board. According to him, in 2024, Ukraine lost about 3,600 km² of territory in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv regions.

For comparison, in 2023, the losses were 540 km², while Ukrainian troops liberated 430 km².

Chmut also noted that this year Ukraine conducted a successful operation in the Kursk region, taking control of about 1,100 km², of which 460 km² is currently held.

At the same time, he believes that the saddest indicator is the increasing pace of the Russian army’s offensive. While in June 2024, the Russians were advancing 100 km² per month (3.4 km² per day), in September this figure increased to 400 km²/month (13.4 km²/day). In November, the rate peaked at 610 km² per month, or 20.3 km² per day.

‘We are losing 20 square kilometres of our land every day. Every day,’ said Chmut.

He also noted that despite the huge losses in equipment, ammunition and manpower, the Russians continue their offensive. The ratio of losses in some parts of the frontline has already reached the level of the World War II.
