Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany. In the Round of 16, she defeated “neutral” athlete Liudmila Samsonova after losing the opening set.

This was reported by Suspilne Sport.

Svitolina started the match strongly and took a 3–1 lead, but was unable to maintain her advantage and lost the first set 3–6. Both players took medical timeouts during the set.

In the second set, the Ukrainian regained control of the match. She broke her opponent’s serve three times and saved six break points. Samsonova managed only one break when Svitolina was already leading 5–2. The set ended 6–3 in favor of the Ukrainian.

In the decisive set, Svitolina lost the opening game on her own serve but then won six consecutive games to secure a 6–2 victory.

As a result, Svitolina reached the quarterfinals in Bad Homburg for the first time in her career. Last year, she was eliminated from the tournament in the Round of 16.

In the next round, the Ukrainian will face China’s Xinyu Wang, who is ranked 52nd in the world.

The tournament in Bad Homburg is Svitolina’s final event before the start of Wimbledon 2026.
