The Security Service detained a Belarusian KGB agent in Volyn who was collecting data on Ukrainian defense positions. He transmitted the coordinates of checkpoints, fortifications, and military trains in the border region.
The SBU reported this.
As the investigation established, the 24-year-old local unemployed man was recruited while searching for “easy money” on Telegram channels.
“Hoping for money from Belarusian special services, the agent agreed to carry out their tasks. Among the main ones was monitoring the locations of checkpoints and fortified areas of the Defense Forces on the northern border of Ukraine. Also, at the request of the KGB, the person in question tried to detect military trains moving along local tracks or at transit stations of Ukrzaliznytsia,” the SBU said.
To collect intelligence, the agent went around the area, where he recorded the fortifications of the Defense Forces and marked their geolocations on Google maps.
SBU officers exposed the suspect in advance and detained the perpetrator at his place of residence. During a search of the detainee’s home, a phone with an anonymous chat in the messenger was seized, which he used to contact a Belarusian special serviceman. His identity has already been established by the SBU’s counterintelligence.
The detainee was informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — high treason committed under martial law. The perpetrator is in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
