Putin said he was ready to temporarily extend the New START treaty, the last effective limitation on the strategic nuclear arsenals of the United States and Russia.
This was reported by Reuters.
The agreement expires on February 5, 2026. It limits the number of deployed warheads to 1,550 on each side. Putin announced that Russia will adhere to this framework for another year after the expiration of the treaty, but only if the United States does the same and does not take destabilizing steps.
The proposal came amid pressure from Donald Trump to end the war in Ukraine and Kyiv’s calls for Washington to increase sanctions against Moscow.
So far, there has been no official reaction from the US administration.
Experts believe that such a step could be an impetus for the resumption of a dialogue between Washington and Moscow on arms control, although negotiations on a new agreement have not yet begun.
