People evacuated from temporarily occupied Oleshky and the surrounding community in the Kherson region have crossed into Ukraine through the Chernihiv region. All those rescued will receive the assistance they need and support to help them adjust.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this in a statement.
A ceasefire was established on the Kherson front to allow the humanitarian operation to proceed. During that time, roads into Oleshky were cleared of mines, humanitarian supplies were delivered and people who needed evacuation were taken out.
Zelenskyy expressed hope that humanitarian access to the city would continue. He also stressed that government agencies and regional and local authorities must provide effective assistance to the evacuees.
The president thanked the United States and US First Lady Melania Trump for their mediation. He also praised Ukraine’s Defense Forces for ensuring security conditions for the operation and thanked Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his team for carrying out the mission.
Zelenskyy also thanked journalists, political and civic leaders, and everyone who drew global attention to the humanitarian catastrophe in occupied Oleshky.
“When the world pays attention, people can be saved. Further steps toward de-escalation and real progress toward peace are needed,” the president said.
Ukraine Top News previously reported that four planes carrying evacuated Oleshky residents had arrived in Gomel, Belarus. The evacuees had first been taken by bus to Anapa in Russia, from where they flew to Belarus. In Gomel, a Ukrainian delegation led by Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets met them ahead of their onward journey to Ukraine.
