On 1 June, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the location of one of the training units of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The attack resulted in both fatalities and injuries among Ukrainian servicemembers, according to a statement published by the Command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on social media.
No formation or mass gatherings of personnel were being held at the time of the strike. Most of the servicemembers were in shelters following the air raid alert, the statement said.
All those injured are receiving the necessary qualified medical assistance. A commission has been established within the Ground Forces Command to investigate the incident, and an official inquiry has been launched. The Operational Command “East” and law enforcement agencies are also fully involved in the investigation.
If it is determined that the deaths and injuries were caused by the actions or negligence of officials, those responsible will be held strictly accountable, the command stressed.
Additional security measures are now being taken to protect the lives and health of military personnel in rear areas, amid continued missile and air attacks by the aggressor.
The Ground Forces Command expressed its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed.
